The opening round of the Formula Regional European Championship handed PREMA Powerteam a considerable amount of success this weekend at Circuit Paul Ricard in France.
The brand-new series, launched as a bridge between Formula 4 and Formula 3, went on-track for the first time this season, and the Italian squad starred from the very beginning. The balance of the weekend includes three pole positions, three wins and seven podiums in total.
At his first race with the team Frederik Vesti secured two wins in perfect style. In race 1, he made the most of the battle between his two teammates before taking P3 in race 2 and surging another brilliant victory in race 3. Race 2 was won by Olli Caldwell. The quick British racer delivered a masterclass performance from pole in a Prema hat-trick, although he was later excluded due to a technical infringement. Prema appealed the decision so the victory stands sub-judice.
On the other hand, Brazilian Enzo Fittipaldi brought home a triple second place and pole position for race 1, impressing with some hard-fought racing. Vesti is currently leading the championship in front of Fittipaldi and Caldwell.
# 2 - Frederik Vesti
"I think it has been a great weekend. I managed to score a lot of points, two wins and a P3. The speed looked good all weekend. In qualifying, I didn't manage to put the lap together. I made a mistake in the last lap when it was drying and lost P1. But we have a great car especially in race trim and we also got the fastest lap of the last race, showing good tire management. I'm very happy and proud of the team. The work we have done in preseason testing has been tough but we managed to put it all together and now I hope we can continue the good results and hard work for the next round in Vallelunga."
# 64 - Olli Caldwell
"We had an enjoyable first race weekend. We were very quick in all practice sessions and qualifying, getting pole for race 2. Unfortunately, the races didn’t go our way, struggling in race 1 and 3 but getting a win in race 2. Looking forward to Vallelunga."
# 74 - Enzo Fittipaldi
"In general we had a positive run, our pace was very strong all weekend. We definitely had the pace to win but things didn't go my way. In race 1 I started from pole. With Olli we tried to fight for the position and eventually compromised both of our races, so Frederik took advantage of it. Anyway, we are fast in race trim and I'm really happy about the results. Thank you to the team, the car was really good. We will work hard to come back on top in Vallelunga."
