PREMA Racing experienced a challenging start of the weekend in qualifying for the final round of the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship. Lining-up under artificial lights at the Emirati venue, Mick Schumacher and Sean Gelael ended up in 10th and 17th place respectively.
After a smooth first half with the track improving, the session came down to a last attempt in the final minutes. Unfortunately, Sean Gelael clipped a kerb and spun in turn 20. That caused a double yellow flag which lasted on until the end of the session, also spoiling the efforts of other drivers including Schumacher. The German racer eventually hanged on to round out the top-10 and will thus start from the fifth row.
#9 - Mick Schumacher
"That was my first Qualifying in the night, although I had been driving in Misano at night in F4 and did the post-season F2 test days last year which were also partly driven in the dark. Still, it was a first, but then it seemed nearly like day to me with all the lights. As for my Qualifying itself, it did not work out too well for various reasons, and in the end we had to settle for P10. I was really hoping to show more, and now we will have to show again that we are good in fighting back."
#10 - Sean Gelael
"Not how I wanted to do the last qualifying of the year. FP1 and stint 1 were difficult but we still did another step which, looking at the sectors, was better. In sector one and two we were close to Mick, but I just bottomed out in the second to last corner on the inside kerb which forced us wide so I went on the sausage kerb and lost control."
