Prema Powerteam achieved an outstanding result in the Formula Abarth races held at Misano. As both the Italian Championship and the European Series took place at the seaside venue, the Italian squad cruised to their first podium finish of 2011 with Luca Ghiotto. The Vicenza-based 16-year-old racer ended up in third place on Race 2 after having started in 6th due to the reverse top-8 grid from qualifying. Earlier on Saturday, he had clocked the third fastest laptime before being off to a great start on Race 1.
A contact with a rival car forced Luca to slow his pace due to some steering damage, but he eventually ended up in 7th as he scored some valuable points for the team. On Race 2, he made his way to podium at the end of a great recovery. Ghiotto fought with all his main rivals en-route to clinch third place, which had been narrowly missed back at Varano and on Race 1 at the Adriatic circuit.
A mistake at the start of Race 1 hampered the run of Vicky Piria. The Italian-British female racer proved competitive since the early practice sessions as he clocked the 13th fastest laptime. Despite all the issues, she recovered and got close to the top-10, but a drive-through penalty for a yellow-flag pass pushed her back down the order. The Perugia-based 17-year-old fought back to 15th place before ending up in the same position on Race 2.
Grazia Troncon – Team Manager
“It's been a really positive weekend at Misano for our team both in Formula 3 and Formula Abarth. It's a pity that the decision to race on an holiday weekend didn't draw more public to the track, and stopped our staff's return to our headquarters instead. However, I really want to stay focused on the great results scored on-track, as our young rookie Luca Ghiotto ended up as the best Italian of the pack while he also cruised to his maiden podium finish. Vicky Piria couldn't repeat the good outings she had at Valencia due to an hesitation at the start of Race 1 that ended up compromising her whole weekend. We're going to try and fight back with her and repeat with Ghiotto in the next rounds. The Italian Championship will be back running at Imola on July 17, while Spa-Francorchamps will host the European Series on August 7".
