It's been a tough weekend for Prema Powerteam at Vallelunga in the penultimate round of the Formula 3 European Series/Italian Formula 3 Champoinship. The Italian-based team faced tough luck in Lazio and will have to wait for the season finale at Monza in order to try wrap up the driver's titles. The speed potential of the team was intact though, as Eddie Cheever Jr scored the second fastest time of qualifying followed by Brandon Maisano in third and Henrique Martins in fifth.
In Race 1, the French Ferrari Driver Academy man passed his Italian team-mate and moved into the Italian Championship lead. Maisano repeated the same result in Race 2 while Cheever spun his car and ended up in sixth. Martins also rounded out the top-5 in his best effort of the weekend.
It was Race 3 to bring the biggest drama for the Italian squad as all three drivers were involved in a contact with Kevin Giovesi. Maisano had to retire with a badly damaged rear end and the same fate hit Martins not too much later due to a broken rim. Only Cheever managed to continue, but with a damaged front wing he had to settle for 7th. Nonetheless, he scored some valuable points in terms of the championship.
Angelo Rosin, Team Principal “Unfortunately we did not get the results that we expected from this race. We showed good pace in testing and at the races, as confirmed by the two second-place finishes scored by Brandon and the podium hit by Eddie in Race 1. Maybe due to the pressure of being at his home race, he made a mistake in Race 2 while going for the lead, while Henrique showed some character by fighting in the middle of the pack. The incident at the start of Race 3 has been unfortunate. It's racing, it can happen but it happened in the worst possible moment, while we should have aimed at increasing our margin. Now everything will be decided at Monza next month, with Brandon leading the Italian Championship”.
